WELCOME TO MSLEXIA
In Issue 75 we’re pleased to share the inventive and stunning poetry of the 2017 Mslexia Poetry Prize, as judged by Sinéad Morrissey, with styles and topics ranging from the fragmented to the formal; from cows in space to the marijuana fields of South Africa. Congratulations to the winners and shortlisted poets – and our thanks to everyone else who entered.
Alongside this are our usual creative slots, including a slice of flash horror; toothsome children’s poetry; and an Elvis-based confession. Read our Agenda feature from Short Story superstar Tania Hershman – the brains and sweat behind short-story resource site Short Stops, she looks at the rise of the short story in the UK. Jules Horne shares just how you can earn a living from writing (copywriting doesn’t mean selling out); our popular Writing in the World feature looks at teaching teachers to write; award-winning author Alison Moore examines the truth of the darkest-before-dawn nature of a career as a writer; and Diane Shipley delves into the wonderful world of fanfiction. We also have an interview with the charming bestselling author Jill Mansell, plus articles touching on the cyclical nature of life and how to harness that power for writing and beyond.
Meanwhile, in Fiction Issues, Sarah Hilary tells us how to write to scare – and in Three of a Kind we offer three publications that are looking for exactly the literary creeps you should be able to produce after reading her article!
Don’t forget to check out the extensive listings and insights. Find out how to tempt Theatre Royal Stratford East with your script, check out what agent Molly Ker Hawn dreams of finding in her inbox, apply for a residency or retreat, and discover just how Charlie Jordan makes her poetry performances so compelling. All this and much, much more.
Want to see yourself in the pages? Check out ‘submissions’ for information on our next Showcase themes (now with space for the scriptwriters among you), as well as all the usual slots. The next Showcase deadline is 4 Sep, so get those entries in this weekend! And remember to get your chapters in for the Novel competition, closing on 18th September!
