Two trains stop at New Street Station. Both carriage C. Creamy light spills from one window into the other, illuminating two travellers in adjacent seats. A laptop and a phone screen occupy their gazes. The woman lifts her head to gather her current location, it’s this motion that distracts the man. Their eyes catch, return to their respective screens and in a heartbeat their eyes meet again. Thrilling, bewildering, fleeting. The woman’s train beeps, its doors draw to a close. The man shoots up, his jaw slack with disbelief as the woman’s train slides away and emerges into daylight.
