Mslexicon is a house party like no other.
Part brainstorm, part bootcamp, part celebration, it is a chance to nurture your writing craft and career with the help of leading agents, authors, tutors and mentors – all handpicked for the depth of their knowledge and commitment to supporting women writers.
Mslexicon 2019 is for writers of creative prose, by which we mean novels and short fiction, memoir and biography, and all other types of narrative non-fiction.
You can join us for the full weekend, or for a curated line-up of talks and panels on either Saturday 13 or Sunday 14 July.

Devonshire Hall has been used as accommodation for literature, music and theatre students since 1924. It consists of several adjoining listed buildings ranged round two grassy courtyards, plus several additional purpose-built blocks in wooded grounds just across the road. Single rooms are available in the main group of older structures, and in the adjacent modern buildings. The majority of rooms are en-suite; additional rooms with personal wash-basins and shared bathroom facilities are available for a reduced price. Find out more about Devonshire Hall here.
Your weekend ticket includes all of your meals, plus refreshments; a pay bar will be open from 6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. The food will be vegetarian and vegan. Meals are self-service, with seating at long wooden tables in a large dining room that opens off the main lounge and bar – and served over two hours to allow for a leisurely break between events.

In response to popular demand, we’ve put together a package of daytime events for those who aren’t able to come for the full Mslexicon weekend experience. Your day ticket includes your choice of talks and panel discussions, and lunch. Please note that a Sunday ticket also includes access to ‘In conversation with… Sophie Hannah’ at 3pm.
All event and workshop spaces are wheelchair accessible, apart from one room reached by a wide staircase. Events taking place in this room will be live-streamed to an accessible room on the ground floor. There are some ground-floor bedrooms on site plus accessibility-adapted bedroom accommodation in the Charles Morris building a short car-ride away. Please telephone 0191 204 8860 if you would like to discuss your accessibility needs and/or the availability of carer accommodation. Further accessibility information for Devonshire Hall and the Charles Morris building is available here.
Workshops, talks, panels:
Each day is divided into morning and afternoon session options, which need to be booked; one-to-one surgery consultations, which also need to be booked; and informal later events for which no booking is necessary. Workshops, talks and panels are held in rooms with a finite capacity, and our guest experts are offering a set number of consultation sessions, so we recommend early booking to ensure your first choice of events and one-to-one experts. You can find the full line up here. Workshops, one-to-one consultations and later events are only included in Weekend Tickets.
Your weekend ticket entitles you to two focussed one-to-one consultations with our guest agents, mentors and book doctors. These are held during special ‘surgery hours’ between talks and workshops – so there’s no need to interrupt your schedule. All of our experts are highly knowledgeable and experienced, but we recommend booking early if there is someone you are especially keen to talk to. To make the best use of your time with your chosen experts, please submit a sample of writing and some information about yourself before Monday, 17 June. Details of what to submit are on the one-to-ones page here. One-to-one consultations are only included in Weekend Tickets.
For those who want to use this get-away opportunity to explore ways of making bigger changes in their lives to help prioritise their creativity, we have commissioned three afternoon-long workshops on Friday, led by experts in ikigai, time-management and resilience training. Find out more about the workshops here. (Additional fee £50) Mini courses are only available to those with Weekend Tickets.
Applications have now closed.
Weekend registration opens at 1pm on Friday 12 July for those who have booked for the Friday mini-courses, and will stay open all afternoon for early arrivals who want time to unpack and settle in before our evening ice-breaker events. Weekend and day-ticket registration will open at 9am on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July. The Mslexia team will be on hand at all times to show you around.
